N.E. India 2024

Abid Rehman, who runs “Eastern Geography Tours” from his home in Assam organised a birding trip to the Indian state of Arunachal Pradesh for my friend Mike Bird and myself. Abid is a friend of ours and accompanied us as our main guide but also brought along a very knowledgeable assistant Arun and an excellent driver Jitoo. We started in Namdapha National Park in the south of Arunachal Pradesh, bordering Myanmar. As there are no lodges or roads within the main part of the park, we had to trek in through the forest and camp, accompanied by several local helpers and an elephant to carry our gear. We then visited the Mishmi Hills before crossing Assam, with a brief stopover to visit Kaziranaga National Park, to enter the northern part of Arunachal Pradesh, near the border with Bhutan. Here we reached an elevation of 4,200 metres at the Sela Pass in the Eastern Himalayas before spending several days at the famous birding hotspot of Eaglenest Wildlife Sanctuary. He we stayed 2 nights in a hut at Lama Camp and 3 nights in tents at Bompu Camp. The trip ended with an overnight stay on the banks of the Brahmaputra River near Tezpur in Assam.
