South Georgia 2026

I visited South Georgia on a trip on the Aurora Expedition’s ship “Douglas Mawson” after first visiting the Antarctic Peninsula. We landed at Grytviken where we had a conducted tour around the old whaling station and visited the grave of the polar explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton. We visited a number of spots along the eastern side of the island, landing amongst huge colonies of King Penguins and gatherings of feisty young Antarctic Fur Seals. Places visited for landings and zodiac cruises were Gold Harbour, St. Andrew’s Bay, Cumberland West Bay, Stromness and Salisbury Plain and the Bay of Isles.
